Before you send your favorite shears out for unnecessary sharpening, take a close look at the atmosphere in your salon. Relative humidity and electrostatic charges play a massive—and often overlooked—role in how cleanly a blade cuts through a coat.

The Physics of Static Electricity on Pet Hair

Static electricity occurs when friction builds up between two non-conductive surfaces, causing an imbalance of positive and negative charges. During the grooming process, high-velocity drying, brushing with synthetic pins, and slicker work all generate static on the dog’s coat.

When the air in your salon is dry—especially during cold winter months or in heavily air-conditioned spaces—this charge has nowhere to dissipate. The individual hair shafts begin to repel each other, creating a microscopic magnetic field around the coat. As your metal shears approach, the static forces the lightweight hair ends to jump away from the blades just a fraction of a second before the cut occurs.   • Maintain Ideal Salon Humidity: Aim to keep your grooming area's relative humidity between 40% and 50%. Using a commercial humidifier during dry seasons keeps hair fibers sufficiently hydrated and allows static charges to discharge naturally into the air.

  • Use Light Anti-Static Preping Sprays: Apply a fine mist of a lightweight, leave-in conditioning or anti-static spray before scissoring. Choose formulas that do not weigh down the coat or leave greasy residues that could gum up your shear tension.
